DOCTOR Who star David Tennant had a double reason to celebrate last night. The actor, 36, signed a new £1.5million deal to carry on playing the Time Lord for at least two more years. And he was named Best Actor for the second year running in the TV Quick & TV Choice Awards.
BBC bosses finally put paid to speculation that he was due to quit as the Doc next year by confirming that he had signed up until 2009. Tennant will be back in a Christmas special and in a new series next year.
But the following year, BBC chiefs will only be making three hour-long specials of the programme. This is to give the Scot a "break" to work on other projects including playing Hamlet on stage.
A source revealed: "We didn't want to lose David and he didn't want to quit the role, as he loves playing the Doctor."
The show scooped three gongs at last night's awards bash at London's Dorchester Hotel.
It won Best Drama, Tennant was voted Best Actor and the spin-off Torchwood won Best New Drama.
Coronation Street picked up four trophies including Best Soap. And Ant and Dec, 31, proved they have still got the magic touch. I'm A Celebrity was voted Best Reality TV Show, while their Saturday Night Takeaway won the Best Entertainment how award.
