VETERAN British actor Jon Pertwee is enjoying an unexpected new lease of life — as a sex symbol.

At the grand age of 71, the white-haired star who played the time-travelling Dr Who in the early '70s has become an American pinup.

Archive episodes of the classic sci-fi series are being screened to acclaim in the US. Pertwee, meanwhile, is stunned by the reaction of his female followers.

"I've lost count of the times I've been enveloped by bosoms you couldn't fit through a front door," he says with a chuckle.

"I can't say no to all the requests for cuddles. or they'd think me terribly ungallant. The same women send me love letters, too. It's terribly embarrassing."

But there's a down side. Apart from the fan mail, Pertwee receives hate letters from jealous husbands and boyfriends.

"One woman was so obsessive, she actually believed I would run away with her," he says.

"She wrote saying she knew my wife and children would understand the strength of our love.

"But her boyfriend wrote to me, upset that he'd lost his woman to a TV star."

Pertwee has had such a flood of bizarre letters that he plans to adapt them for a book or a play.

He says modestly: "I don't think I'm sexy, but I keep fit. If I'm not active, I can be a real pain in the backside."

Pertwee keeps busy hosting Dr Who conventions in Britain — although all the restrained British fans want from him is an autograph.
