[edit]

A JOB filing newspaper cuttings for the BBC has led to stardom for 18-year-old Matthew Waterhouse.

Matthew, who left his grammar school in Shoreham just last year, has had no professional acting training or experience, yet he is to replace actress Lalla Ward as Dr Who's assistant in the new series which starts in November.

"It's very exciting," he said Way "I play a very different port from Lalla's—I'm not as attractive for a start."

Matthew, who always wanted to be an actor, went to work for the BBC's news information department after sitting for A-levels last summer.

A chance meeting with someone from the corporation's casting advisory service led to him getting a small part in a new BBC drama series about a public school which will also be seen in the autumn.
