Richard E Grant comes crashing through time to an internet portal near you

It's the moment Doctor Who fans have been waiting for—the heroic time traveller is finally making a comeback. But the new Doctor is slightly different from his predecessors — he's a cartoon animation produced for the BBC by the makers of Dangermouse — and he'll be broadcast over the internet.

Hollywood star Richard E Grant will provide the voice of the Time Lord, but it's not the first time he's taken on the role — he first entered the Tardis in 1999 for Comic Relief.

Grant admits to not having watched the cult series during his childhood in Africa, but told RT he enjoyed playing the famous part.

"It being a voice-only role there was no need to get into costume, make-up or hours of special effects, which in the freak heat of mid-June was very welcome."

But what sort of Doctor will he be? Eccentric? Serious? Ditzy? "All of those and more. And add witty, dry and romantic," he says.

The show, which also features Derek Jacobi (as the Master) and Diana Quick, is set for broadcast in November, to coincide with celebrations for the series' 40th anniversary. A BBC spokeswoman told RT the new version is aimed at adults and children: "It's for anyone, from die-hard Doctor Who fans to a new generation who haven't come across it before. It's a totally new series with new characters, not a cartoon remake."

Devotees will be disappointed that Grant has not been asked to re-create the role of the Doctor for television, though the Tardis may yet rematerialise. BBC Films is currently considering whether to bring a movie version of Doctor Who to the big screen.
