LONDON (AP)—The Christmas outlook is horrific. All the kiddies want Daleks.
And what, pray, are Daleks? They are things or persons created for a children's television series called Dr. Who.
This is a space-time serial that for years has flitted unspectacularly from planet to planet without stirring up much comment.
Suddenly, however, Dr. Who has hit the jackpot with a story of an invasion by Daleks. Dalekitis may be as big an epidemic as Beatlemania.
A Dalek is an armor-plated cone topped by a sort of helmet with death-ray antennae. Inside is a once-human monster supposedly so revolting that even the tele-screens won't show it.
Dalek toys and outfits are on sale for the Christmas trade.
They come in two sizes.
One is a battery-powered job which wobbles across the floor emitting metallic noises.
The other is a child-powered model tailored to fit the average 8-year-old.
Even the dear old British Broadcasting Corp. already has issued instructions for making a do-it-yourself Dalek.
The advertising, pitch for the toys or outfits has a swell theme: "Superfun: Disintegrate Your Dad."
