A number of pledgers in the December fund drive enclosed letters asking why we pre-empted Doctor Who so much. They suggested that we might delay broadcast to 10:30 p.m., preempting PBS LateNight instead.
According to Elaine Sprenkle, Program Director, there are a number of reasons for the "pre-empting" of Doctor Who. First. PBS LateNight is a live, phone-in program and is totally or partially lost if pre-empted. Secondly, Elaine points out that Doctor Who is not really pre-empted in the normal sense of the word, since none of the episodes are lost. They are aired in succession. Thirdly, the Doctor Who episodes are broadcast according to the weekly schedule and the program listings in Patterns. Viewers are notified of pre-emptions far in advance of the broadcast date. Finally, in many cases, both Doctor Who and PBS LateNight are pre-empted.
