Klingons beamed into Weston for a sci-fi convention which attracted thousands to the Winter Gardens. More than 30 actors from series including Star Trek, Star Wars and Dr Who attended the Galaxy of Stars event. Among them were Star Wars trio Dave Prowse, who played the evil Darth Vader, Jeremy Bulloch, who was bounty hunter Boba Fett, and Kenny Baker, who played the robot R2D2.
Former Dr Who assistant Mary Tamm and Warwick Davis, who appeared in the Harry Potter films as well as Star Wars, were also among the VIPs.
The event was organised by three Weston businessmen and was held as Dr Who returned to TV screens after an 18-year gap and only weeks before the final Star Wars movie is released.
Jason Smith, who arranged the convention with toy shop owner Dave Burrows and property developer Miles Orme, said: "There was a great response, with people travelling from as far away as Denmark and Scotland to meet stars and get their autographs. The venue was perfect and although it took six or seven months to organise, I think we will hold another one." An estimated 5,000 visitors attended the convention.
They got the chance to chat to their favourite characters, step inside the Tardis and meet a group of Daleks.
Mr Smith, aged 34, and his colleagues are now planning a James Bond convention at the Winter Gardens in the autumn and hope to have some big names from the films appearing.
