The BBC is heading to the courts to find the source of leaked footage of the next Doctor Who series.

A 53-second clip featuring new Doctor Jodie Whittaker, right, was shared via California-based internet forum app Tapatalk a week ago.

BBC Studios said it takes "theft and illegal distribution of our content extremely seriously" and insiders fear other clips could leak. So the Beeb has filed an application with the California Federal Court in an attempt to force Tapatalk to produce records. But it faces a tough task under US laws.

BBC Studios said: "We will strive to protect our programme-makers, audiences and licence fee payers from any breaches of security - ensuring Doctor Who fans enjoy the final and fully completed version of the episode when it premieres."

Jodie is the first woman to play the Doctor and her first series is due to be broadcast during the autumn.
