THE FOUR surviving Doctor Whos will be the star attractions at a convention being held in Manchester for the first time.

Tom Baker, Colin Baker, Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy will join hundreds of sci-fi fanatics at the Palace Hotel next month.

The famous police box Tardis, the set of its deceptively large interior and K9 will also be on show at the event which is coming to Manchester for the first time.

PanoptiCon 2000, named after the meeting hall of the Doctor's own people the Time Lords, will allow fans to pose for photographs with their heroes, ask them questions in interview sessions, see costumes and props and browse in the dealers' hall.

Event co-ordinator Andrew Beech said: "We're expecting about 1,000 people to come along and meet the Doctors, their assistants and other actors who were part of the show.

"Their enthusiasm never seems to fade and we're still getting new fans, usually children of the people who have loved the show for the 25 years that it was shown."

Andrew Eaton, of Timperley, is the chair of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society and has been attending the event for the last 20 years.

He said: "There are still a lot of fanatics out there, some people grow out of it and my mum is still hoping that I do. I've loved Doctor Who since the show started when I was two and it was always my ambition to be a doctor when I grew up. I succeeded when I got my PhD."

PanoptiCon will also see the launch of the first Doctor Who episode to be released on DVD. Cast members from The Robots of Death including Tom Baker, his assistant Leela, played by EastEnders actress Louise Jameson, and some of the robots will be making an appearance.
