(Doctor Who, BBC1, 7pm)
Age: 41. Style: Brooding thesp.
Significant other: Famously cagey about his private life, the Salford-born actor has been linked to Welsh actress Siwan Morris.
Finest hour: A Bafta-nominated performance as the possible son of God in ITV's The Second Coming.
Don't mention: His turn in the big-budget Gone In 60 Seconds, a film he describes as 'sheer rubbish'.
He says: On the part his excellent bone structure plays in his acting success — 'It's the sort of face lighting directors can do things with.'
And another thing: He originally wanted to be a footballer.
Doctor Who ★★★★★
BBC1 7pm Taking an old favourite from British television's cheap and charming past and bringing it to a new audience is always tough, but the new Doctor Who team, led by Queer As Folk writer Russell T. Davies, seem to have pulled it off. This opening episode is clearly just a taster for the cheesy sci-fi fun to come, and features the new Doctor (a manic yet enigmatic Christopher Eccleston) hooking up with his new assistant (Billie Piper) and fighting off shop dummies. Good to see the sonic screwdriver wheeled out for old times' sake, too.
