Jon Pertwee, the actor known to millions as Dr Who and Worzel Gummidge, died in his sleep today, aged 76, a BBC spokesman said. His death comes as the BBC prepares to show the up-dated film of the science fiction classic, starring Paul McGann.

Although he spent more than 60 years in showbusiness in stage, film and music hall, Jon Pertwee was most strongly identified with Dr Who and with Worzel Gummidge.

He never minded the type-casting: "I'm very much afraid to say it, but I'm rather a cult figure," he said recently.

Pertwee worked right up until the end, planning a one-man show.

He presented A Short History Of Time on BBC Radio 2 in March and was planning more radio work with friend Richard Briers. "Actors don't retire, they fade away, like old generals. I just want to peter out, not rust out! I get desperately bored when I'm not working," he said.

He came from a family rich in theatrical talent - father Roland was a writer, his elder brother Michael became a screenwriter and playwright and cousin Bill Pertwee became the warden in Dad's Army. His son Sean is also a busy actor, who has worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company and on television, most recently in Bodyguards on ITV, and daughter Dariel is an actress.

His first wife was actress Jean Marsh and the second was German-born Ingeborg, a writer.
