I arrived at another old stager, Dr Who (BBC-1, February 26) at a very trying moment. 'Tomorrow', a voice was saying as I switched on, 'is St Bartholomew's Day'. Presently André Morell, looking sad and dignified, observed, 'We are to unleash the wolves of Paris'; a pair of comic guards were telling each other that they wouldn't be sorry to see the night over; and Dr Who murmured, 'There's the tocsin'. Soon, after a surely needless and nightmare-raising portfolio of Massacre woodcuts, we were in the old police-box again, hurtling through time, while Dr Who explained—rather glumly, I felt— 'I dare not change the course of history' : a profound truth.
