Carl Forgione died peacefully in the Royal Marsden Hospital on September 10, aged 54, after a long battle against cancer.
He was a quietly remarkable man who was genuinely loved by everyone who knew him. A versatile and respected actor, his career spanned three decades, during which he played everything from regulars in Emmerdale Farm and Dr Who, to Sergeant Match in What the Butler Saw and Dr Shoes in Lulu.
He had worked in most of the theatres, for all the television companies and for many of the best directors, including Zeffirelli. I can see him now, in his Philip Marlowe hat and mac, striding through our front door, bandaged and indefatigable. He was always so interested in what you were doing and so unselfishly glad for your success. His courage and the sense of humour never left him.
Carl, the grandson of Italian immigrants, was bom in Scotland but brought up in the Rhondda Valley. He combined the best qualities of the Mediterranean and the Celt. The Brit was strong in him too. You saw that in his love for that most English of games, cricket.
I had the privilege of directing Cad - most memorably in the first production of the Bare Boards Theatre Company, of which he was a founder member. It was to give a home to the best of new writing to which he had remained committed since founding the Basement Theatre with David Halliwell and Wally Hall in the sixties. In the rehearsal room he was sensitive to suggestion, creative, intelligent, imaginative and utterly truthful.
It was during the run of Annie Castledine's production of The Country Girl at Greenwich, three years ago, that his illness was diagnosed.
Nevertheless, throughout his treatment his will to work never left him. He continued to make notes about his experiences, determined to write a piece that he could perform in order to give insight to other sufferers. Carl was the salt of our profession.
He was a devoted husband and his marriage to Lorraine and the beautiful home they had built together was at the very heart of his life. He was a fine actor, the best of friends and he enriched the life of everyone who knew him.
Carl Forgione - the 'salt of our profession'
