THINGS YOU DID NOT KNOW ABOUT DALEKS
MUCH-loved sci-fi show Doctor AN Who is ringing in the new year with an action-packed special.
Showing tonight, Revolution Of The Daleks sees the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) come face to face with one of her most iconic foes.
The deadly Daleks, known for P[ their chilling catchphrase "exterminate!", have even had a makeover for the show.
But what do you know about the Doctor Who villains? To mark the festive special NATASHA WYNARCZYK presents 10 fascinating facts...
- The Daleks first made their appearance in December 1963 when they captured the then Doctor William Hartnell. They are from the planet Skaro and are the most evil beings in the Doctor Who universe.
- They are the only monsters in the series to have battled every incarnation of the Doctor. When the 2005 series, starring Christopher Eccleston as the title character, began it took writers only six episodes to bring back the Daleks.
- Their iconic look was based on the salt and pepper shakers that you see in restaurants. Creators also hid the wheels of the Daleks, so that they were able to glide around.
- The original Daleks were controlled from the inside by operators who had to move their eyestalks, domes and arms and flash the lights on their heads in sync with the actors' voices.
- The Daleks are a huge army of soldiers with ranks. Most of the ones seen in Doctor Who are drones - the lowest rank - but they still have the ability to wipe out entire races. The most powerful Dalek in their army is their leader, Davros.
- In 2016, the Radio Times revealed that the Daleks have said "exterminate!" 514 times - on average nine times a year for the show's then 53-year run. David Tennant's 10th Doctor had the most threats - 53 - while fourth Doctor Tom Baker had the least at 12.
- The word "Dalek" has been put into the Oxford English Dictionary. Although there is no true meaning behind their name, it sounds like the Norwegian word for "bad" - "dårlig". In 1964, the BBC trademarked the word 'Dalek' so they could release merchandise.
- In the finale of The Vicar Of Dibley, Geraldine Granger (Dawn French) marries accountant Harry Kennedy in a bizarre wedding where two of her bridesmaids were dressed as Daleks. They also appeared in 1992's Merry Christmas Mr Bean, when the title character, portrayed by Rowan Atkinson, plays with a toy Dalek in the nativity set inside a shop.
- Daleks have been referenced in several songs, including The Clash's 1977 number Remote Control, where Joe Strummer sings "Repression, gonna be a Dalek! Kirsty MacColl's Here Comes That Man Again! and I'm Gonna Spend My Christmas with a Dalek by The Go-Go's.
- Doncaster man Rob Hull holds the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of Daleks - he has almost 2,000 of them, from small toys to large replicas... but weirdly claims to not really be a fan of the show.
Doctor Who: Revolution Of The Daleks is showing tonight at 6.45pm on BBC One.
