Ian Marter, the actor who played Surgeon-Lieutenant Harry Sullivan on Doctor Who in the mid-1970s, died October 29, 1986. Marter, who also authored eight novelizations of Who adventures and an original spin-off novel, was 43.

Marter's acting training was at the Bristol Old Vic in England. His first appearance on Doctor Who was a guest-starring role in the 1973 Jon Pertwee story "Carnival of Monsters." He returned in 1974 as Sullivan, the somewhat bumbling medical officer who accompanied Tom Baker (as the Doctor) and Elisabeth Sladen (as Sarah Jane Smith through six consecutive stories ("Robot" through "Terror of the Zygons"), returning for a seventh time in "The Android Invasion." He also appeared' in a number of plays in London's West End, including Conduct Unbecoming and Abelard and Heloise.

Since the explosion of interest in Doctor Who in the United States, Marter had been a frequent and popular guest at conventions.
