Jeff Builds Own Doctor Who Monster
A DOCTOR Who fan spent three years building a replica Dalek.
Dad-of-three Jeff Palmer, 45, built his evil mechanoid out of car parts, old Christmas decorations, baked bean cans - and, of course, a sink plunger.
He based his design on the 1972 version of the Daleks, who plagued Jon Pertwee's Doctor in the BBC TV show.
Jeff's full-size replica stands 5ft tall, is on wheels and comes complete with a motor that can travel up to 8mph. He said: 'I've been a fan of Dr Who since I was a child. The Dalek is an icon and it was my dream to own one. I love the reaction I get when I take it out for a spin.
'Doctor Who had dozens of adversaries - the Cybermen, the Sea Devils, the Yeti - but the Daleks are the most recognisable and keep coming back.'
Jeff plans to show off the Dalek at special events and fetes near his home in Swindon, Wiltshire.
And - though he hasn't told his wife Lynn - he's planning to build a Cyberman
HOW TO MAKE A DALEK
1. Make the fender (the black bit at the bottom) from plywood.
2. Make the skirt from MDF/chip board. The spheres are Christmas decorations
3. The neck is made of chip board/MDF.
4. The dome is fibre glass and built on a turntable so it rotates.
5. The lights on the dome are Land Rover indicators. The eyeball is a sugar bowl with the end of bean cans stuck on top.
6. Make the robotic arm from a plunger.
7. Power the Dalek with an engine from a disabled scooter
