'Doctor Who' spinoff by BBC takes viewers into dark, adult world

If you're searching for interesting programming to get you through these strike-bound days, there's a good opportunity in Torchwood.

The British fantasy series has been seen on BBC America (where its second season will begin on Saturday) and on HDNet, and its first season comes to DVD on Tuesday (BBC Video, 13 episodes, seven discs, $79.98).

Spun off the latest revival of Doctor Who - in fact, "Torchwood" is an anagram of "Doctor Who" - the series involves a semisecret organization dealing with weird phenomena, including strange creatures, in Cardiff, Wales. (Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sunnydale, Cardiff is one of those places where all sorts of phenomena intersect.)

It is a dark, adult and sexual series; one early episode has a creature feeding off the energy from an orgasm. And one of the benefits of seeing it on DVD is that you get its uncut, original form; BBC America is notorious for trimming shows.

It is also funny, intriguing and habit-forming. It looks great on DVD - perhaps too great at times, since some early scenes are so bright and well-lighted that they look Hollywood-contrived. And the DVD includes ample extras about the making of the series.
