THE dastardly Daleks are set to make a return to TV screens — EX-TER-MIN-ATING in American accents.

Hollywood moguls expect to start making a £3.3 million film featuring Dr Who and his metallic enemies early next year.

Universal, the studio that produced Jurassic Park, has won the race to revive the cult show axed by the BBC in 1989.

A source at Universal said: "It is just a matter of dotting the i's and crossing the t's before we can go ahead."

It will end five years of speculation over Hollywood plans for the time-travelling doctor and his Tardis.

At one point Julia Roberts and Harrison Ford were expected to star in a £23 million Steven Spiel-berg spectacular.

The names of Simon Callow, Eric Idle, Alan Rickman, John Cleese, Steve Martin and John Hurt have all been touted around for the title role in other abortive versions.

But at the moment it is Sylvester McCoy, the final BBC Doctor, who is expected to recreate his portrayal.

The film, which will be screened in Britain by the BBC, will feature lavish special effects, and the usual space villains such as the Daleks, Cybermen and Ice Warriors.

In its heyday, the series, launched in 1963, attracted 16 million viewers in Britain and has been seen in 70 countries.
