SEX Education star Ncuti Gatwa will become the first black actor to land the Doctor Who lead role.

The 29-year-old Rwandan-Scottish star is best known as gay character Eric Effiong in the Netflix show, filming saucy scenes with a banana and wearing drag. But now the award-winning actor is about to step into the Tardis, taking over from Jodie Whittaker, 39.

And BBC bosses hope he will push ratings up once again.

Last night Ncuti - who had to keep the news secret for three months - said: "There aren't quite the words to describe how I'm feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.

"This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with care.

"I will endeavour my utmost to do the same."

Show boss Russell T Davies, who is returning to take charge of the series, added: "The future is here and it's Ncuti. I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!"
