Sir, Do I detect a hint of science fiction snobbery in the Thunderer (April 12)?
To call the viewers of these programmes infantile is absurd. The likes of Doctor. Who and Star Trek are not as serious as H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds but they are not supposed to be. Doctor Who is a children's show which most of us view with a sense of nostalgia for its camp cheesiness. rubber monsters and sets on the verge of collapse. We yearn for the days when Tom Baker. with pockets full of jelly babies and a sonic screwdriver, would save. the world using nothing more than quickness of wit.
Perhaps if you are looking' for a more intellectual example of the improvement of the modern sci-fi drama you should have witched the excellent remake of the 1953 series The Quatermass Experiment last year or this years thought-provoking A for Andromeda.
