But there is some good news for frustrated fans the long-awaited twelfth series is due to kick off on New Year's Day. Insiders say the first instalment of a two-part story, starring Jodie Whittaker in her second run as the Doctor, is one of the most ambitious attempted.
"It's going to be huge," one source said.
"The scale is just epic. No one will be disappointed:"
Whittaker and time-travelling pals Bradley Walsh as Graham O'Brien, Tosin Cole (Ryan Sinclair) and Mandip Gill (Yasmin Khan) will all return for the 10-part run when it launches on 1 January.
