[edit]

A NEW DR WHO—fourth of the dynasty.

Tom Baker, a former member of the National Theatre Company with a host of classic roles behind him, steps into the shoes of Jon Pertwee when the new BBC-1 series opens on the Saturday after Christmas.

Their predecessors in the series, which started in 1963, were William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton.

Mr Pertwee relinquished the role to return to the stage.

The new Dr Who will present a younger image; Tom Baker is in his thirties, John Pertwee in his fifties.

Elizabeth Sladen, who plays Doctor Who's assistant, Sarah Jane Smith, returns in the new series, and Ian Marter joins the regular cast as Harry Sullivan, a Surgeon-Lieutenant, RN.
