THE PRESS never allows anybody or anything to bask in success for very long. The BBC's Doctor Who, acclaimed when it returned to our screens last year, got a more mixed reception as its new series began last Saturday.

In The Times, Leo McKinstry dismissed its "hysterical following" as "another indicator of how juvenile we have become". The News of the World's Ian Hyland ("the toxic TV critic") described the first episode as "slow-paced, slack-scripted and riddled with self-indulgence".

The Observer's Andrew Anthony thought it "too old for kids and too young" for adults. The Sunday Mirror gleefully reported that the first series had flopped in America, where Doctor Who's Billie Piper (who plays Rose Tyler) was losing out in the ratings to another blonde bombshell, Tricia Helfer, starring in another 1970s revival, Battlestar Galactica.

As a Who addict, I was relieved that The Times's Caitlin Moran thought the return of the series made "the entire medium of television 50 per cent brighter and more fun".
