The actress was best known for playing Alexis Colby's scheming sister Cassandra "Caress" Morrell in the US soap in the mid1980s. She also had prominent roles in Doctor Who, Howards' Way and Triangle.
Her agent Phil Belfield said she died in a Sussex nursing home yesterday after a short illness. He added: "She was extraordinary, she had so much energy and vitality with a love for theatre and acting. A shining star has gone out and Kate will be dearly missed by all who knew and have worked with her."
Joan Collins, who starred in Dynasty with her, tweeted: "Tragic news. We had great fun on Dynasty when she played my sister Caress who Alexis insisted on calling Cassie."
Actress Bonnie Langford tweeted: "So sad to hear that the wonderful Kate O'Mara has gone. Treasured memories." Colin Baker, who starred opposite her in Doctor Who, said: "Sad sad news. A delightful, committed and talented lady and actress."
Television
TV presenter Graham Norton said: "I loved every encounter I had with her. Today doesn't seem so sunny."
The last time the actress tweeted her fans was on March 17 when she said: "Thank you so much. It's both humbling and completely overwhelming to read all your messages."
The actress, who was married and divorced three times, first began landing television roles in the 1960s, appearing in The Saint with Roger Moore, but it was in the 1980s that she landed her biggest and longest-running roles.
As well as Dynasty she starred as a ruthless businesswoman in drama Howards' Way, which was dubbed the "Dallas of the Seas" and in Doctor Who opposite both Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. Last year, which was Doctor Who's 50th anniversary, she said she would like to reprise the role as The Rani.
In the 1990s she starred in the comedy show Absolutely Fabulous as Jackie, the sister of Joanna Lumley's character Patsy. More recently she had appeared in ITV soap Benidorm and a 2012 stage adaptation of Agatha Christie's Death On The Nile. She is survived by her sister, the actress Belinda Carroll.
