TODAY'S CHOICES
DRAMA OF THE WEEK
Doctor Who 7.15pm BBC1
It might be a different Doctor Who, but the same verve and energy still fire up this exciting, funny and occasionally camp adventure series. David Tennant is perfect as the hero, and throughout he looks delighted at his obvious good fortune. He's sexy, too, so there's a frisson of romantic tension with his sidekick Rose (Billie Piper) when the pair fetch up on New Earth five billion years in the future, after the Doctor receives a message from a hospitalised old friend.
It's a sinister place, staffed by strange, cat-faced nurses, which hides a sad and terrible secret. As the Doctor seeks out his ailing pal, Rose once more gets on the wrong side of the vain and imperious Cassandra (Zoe Wanamaker).
The story, by Russell T Davies, has poignancy and heart, and it's great family viewing (but not suitable for very young children). Cameras follow Tennant filming this first adventure in Doctor Who Confidential on BBC3 at 8pm. Sixteen-page special: page 12
THE INSIDE STORY
If you're pining for more Doctor Who (7.15pm BBC1), you can watch minute-long episodes on mobile phones and the net. In the first "Tardisode", there are Sisters of Plenitude (right), who appear in today's TV episode, and extra footage not on TV. After tonight's TV episode has been shown, the second of 13 mini-programmes becomes available. To download the Tardisodes, text TARDIS to 81010 on video/net-enabled mobiles (maximum cost 15p plus operators' charges, but no charge for the video content), or visit www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/tardisodes.
