Meet the Time Nerd as Tennant transforms sci-fi hero into a real geek!

NEW Doctor Who David Tennant has been turned into something scarier than a Dalek - a geek. Show bosses needed to give the Time Lord a new look after his regeneration from trendy Doc Christopher Eccleston.

As our sensational pictures show, they have given The Doctor the Jarvis Cocker-style chic geek look. Tennant, 34, sports a drab brown overcoat, a brown pin-striped suit with tie - and a pair of dirty plimsolls.

Beeb bosses hope the look will be a hit with science fiction fans when Doctor Who returns for a Christmas special and a new series next year. And Tennant, who played Casanova on telly earlier this year, says he loves the look.

So does sexy Billie Piper, who plays the Doctor's sidekick Rose Tyler and famously dated and married geeky-looking media tycoon Chris Evans, 39.

Thrilled

David, the 10th Doctor, said: "1 think we've come up with something distinctive that's both timeless and modern, with a bit of geek chic and of course a dash of Time Lord. "Most importantly Billie tells me she likes it.

"And after all, she's the one who has to see me in it for the next nine months."

Billie, 22, who will appear in the whole of the second series, added: "I'm thrilled to be stepping back into the role of Rose.

"We plan to make series two even bigger and better and challenge the viewers' imaginations like never before.

"Wait until you get a load of the new Doctor."

Show writer and executive producer Russell T Davies, 41, said fans were in for a treat when the festive special and second series airs. There are already predictions it will top the first series, which drew 10.5 million viewers for its launch and thrashed ITV1 in the Saturday night ratings war.

He said: "We can promise new thrills, new laughs, new heartbreak, and some terrifying new aliens. "Fans can expect to see the Doctor and Rose meet Queen Victoria, an evil race of Cat Women and the dreaded Cybermen.

"Let's just say 2006 is going to be scarier than ever!"

In the BBC 60-minute Christmas special - which has just begun filming - the show picks up from the dramatic regeneration fans saw last month.

Rose has to come to terms with the loss of the old Doctor (Eccleston, 41), and get used to the new Time Lord. They arrive in London and discover the human race is under threat from a new alien called Sycorax.

Assault

And they are also reunited with MP Harriet Jones (Penelope Wilton, 59) who helped them defeat the ; Slitheens assault on Parliament in t series one.

The second series will be screened next spring. Among writers lined up to pen episodes are comedy actor Stephen Fry, 47.

And Stars set to make an appearance include Little Britain and Buffy actor Anthony Head, 49, and Coyote Ugly's Adam Garcia, 32. Elisabeth Sladen, 57, who played the Doc's sidekick in the 1970s alongside Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee, is also set to make a surprise reappearance.

David said of the enormity of his new role: "When I found out that I would get the part I just laughed.

"I found it hilarious and impossible."
