Happy anniversary, Doctor! Tonight marks 60 years since the enigmatic, initially not so benevolent alien and his space/time ship Tardis first captivated a teatime family audience. The wicked Daleks debuted in what was only his second adventure in 1963 and sealed the success of Doctor Who, with ratings soaring to 10.4 million.
Written by Terry Nation, the original black-and-white, seven-episode serial was big on ideas, epic in scope and claustrophobic in execution (at the BBC's cramped Lime Grove Studios). It was an instant TV classic. At 7.30pm, BBC4 is premiering a lustrous new edition of The Daleks — trimmed to 75 minutes by Benjamin Cook (who used to report for RT), colourised (always a controversial move) and with an enhanced soundtrack from Mark Ayres (based on Tristram Cary's eerie original). Stand by to be entranced by the magic of television all over again.
It's followed at 8.45pm by An Adventure in Space and Time, Mark Gatiss's heartfelt drama looking at the origins of Doctor Who, made for the 50th anniversary and with a cast including David Bradley, Lesley Manville and Brian Cox. Starry night. This week: page 8
