ACTOR Ncuti Gatwa will take over from Jodie Whittaker as the next Doctor Who, the BBC revealed yesterday.

The star, 29, will become the 14th Time Lord on the ever-popular sci-fi show, and the first black actor to take on the role full time.

Rwandan-born Scottish star Ncuti is best known for hit Netflix show Sex Education.

He said: "There aren't quite the words to describe how I'm feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and, of course, a little bit scared.

"This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.

"I will endeavour my utmost to do the same. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show.

"And so as much as it's daunting, I'm aware I'm joining a really supportive family.

"Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show." In another big move, It's A Sin writer Russell T Davies is returning as series showrunner after departing in 2009.

Russell, responsible for Doctor Who's 2005 revival, said: "The future is here and it's Ncuti.

"Sometimes talent walks through the door and it's so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars.

"Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those Tardis keys in seconds. It's an honour to work with him. I can't wait to get started."

Ncuti posed with Russell on the red carpet before last night's Bafta TV Awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Jodie was the 13th Doctor and the first full-time female regeneration. Aside from the main Doctors, a number of actors have played Who's various guest guises over the years, confusing fans' numbering systems.
