[edit]

Saturday's special, The Women of Doctor Who, is airing on Space on the same day and time it makes its debut on BBC America, and the Beeb's American arm has been talking up the program all week with an online viewer poll, Who's the Greatest Woman of Doctor Who, with the semi finalists divided into two categories: classic Who and modern Who.

The special, much like Doctor Who itself — in all its incarnations — is predicated on the idea that behind every time lord there's a great woman, a woman more grounded, rational and sensible than the Doctor, who's forever getting himself into jams that only his levelheaded companion can help him out of. "Whether they're busting Daleks or the Doctor's ego," BBC America's web-site cheerfully informs, "the Women of Doctor Who prove that you don't need testosterone to the save the universe."

Sure, The Women of Doctor Who is just a glorified excuse for a clip show, but it's both fun and nostalgic to watch. Even for the uninitiated viewer. (SATURDAY Space, 9 ET)
