Richard Twinn's references to TV's time-travelling Doctor Who and his space-machine telephone booth failed to stop him being convicted of criminal damage for smashing windows at a former girlfriend's home. Twinn (39), of Kingsthorpe, Northants, told the Old Bailey yesterday that an inner force had made him go to Park Cottages, St. Margaret's Road, Twickenham, Middlesex, home of a former French girlfriend.
"After waiting around there for some time, I noticed the telephone booth to my right. I began to think I was doing a film series for the new Dr. Who," he said, denying the charge.
"I walked inside the telephone booth and thought it was a spaceship or a time machine.
"When I came out again I checked the date on my watch. The date showed the year 1991 and not 1980. The illusion was further enhanced by a jet flying over, with its red and green landing lights flashing." Twinn, conducting his own defence after promising not to attempt to escape, said he smashed glass panes in the door of the cottage because he feared a woman he married in 1991 was in danger inside.
"Police came later and I was taken out of the house. I assumed that I was under arrest and I remember thinking how strange. You see I thought the house was my own property." Conditionally discharging him for 12 months, Judge Lewisohn said he was bearing in mind the man was of previous good character and had spent time in Brixton Prison on remand.
