Actress Lalla gets damages over 'lesbian' pictures
ACTRESS Lalla Ward was horrified when a girlie magazine published a photograph of her and a series of other full frontal shots purporting to show her nude and in a lesbian embrace.
For while the picture of her face was genuine, the naked body was that of another woman, the High Court heard yesterday.
Lalla, who found fame as Dr Who's assistant Romana in the TV series was awarded 'substantial' damages against the magazine Club International, its owner Paul Raymond, its editor Roger Cook and film producer James Clarke.
Miss Ward's counsel Mr David Eady Q.C. told Mr Justice Mars-Jones that in February 1981 Club International had a photograph of her on its cover with the words Our latest celebrity nude sensation." Inside were 16 photographs some showing full frontal nudity and lesbian scenes.
Miss Ward, 31-year-old daughter of Viscount Bangor, was 'greatly distressed' by the publication, said Mr. Eady.
She had appeared in a number of film, TV and stage roles, and it was well known that she refused to appear in films or plays involving full frontal nudity.
Knowledge
Miss Ward, who married Dr Who actor Tom Baker in 1980 but is now separated, had turned down a number of opportunities because of her strong views and the feature in the magazine conveyed the impression she was a 'hypocrite' who had in her early years a history of pornographic modelling, said Mr Eady.
The real background to the pictures was that in 1973 Miss Ward had taken part in a film, produced by Mr Clarke, called 'Got It Made.'
It was a film with actors of high calibre and portrayed the unhappy relationship of a young girl on the verge of marriage. There was one scene in which Lalla appeared topless with a male actor, but it was in no sense pornographic.
Subsequently, without her knowledge or consent, Mr Clarke interposed scenes in that film involving the body of another actress and re-issued it under the title Sweet Virgin.
It included scenes involving full frontal nudity and lesbian activity, in which the impression was falsely conveyed that Lalla was participating.
The pictures in the magazine were stills from this film and were not of Miss Ward's body.
Mr Desmond Browne for Paul Raymond and the other defendants agreed the pictures gave a false impression and apologised for the 'embarrassment and distress' caused.
Afterwards Miss Ward said: 'I'm glad that's over. It took courage to bring it all out into the open but I felt I had to.'
Lalla Ward yesterday : 'I'm glad it's all over'
