Dr Who

7pm, BBC1

The highly entertaining revival of the sci-fi legend continues, and the Doctor's new sidekick, Rose (Billie Piper), takes her first trip through time in order to witness the end of planet Earth.

Basically, the sun is poised to expand and swallow our planet, but don't panic — all this takes place in the year five million (and, of course, it's only a story). A whole bunch of aliens have gathered to watch, and the BBC model-making department has clearly been working overtime.

There are no Blake's 7-style thinly disguised washing-up-liquid bottles in evidence, mind. Weird and well-made creations include the Face of Boe (above), a giant, dreadlocked head in a jar.
