Jon Pertwee, a longtime British actor best known for his role in the British TV series "Dr. Who," died May 20 of undisclosed causes in New York. He was 76.
Born into a theatrical family in 1919, Pertwee worked in all facets of British entertainment including radio and telvision.
In his early years, critics compared him to Danny Kaye after he became a regular in the popular "Carry On" films.
In 1969, he joined the cast of "Dr. Who," a long-running British TV series. Pertwee left the show in 1974 and appeared in several musicals on London's West End including "Irene."
He later appeared on the BBC children's series "Worzel Gummidge" for four years.
Pertwee also appeared in several feature films including "The House That Dripped Blood" and "One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing," as well as the A&E production of "The Curious Case of Santa Claus" and the 25th anniversary special of "The Five Doctors."
He most recently appeared in the one-man show "Who Is Jon Pertwee?"
Pertwee is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
