Fans want star to replace departing Time Lord Jodie
DOCTOR Who fans are calling for Jo Martin to become the 14th Time Lord when Jodie Whittaker quits at the end of this year.
Holby City star Martin was a hit when she guest-starred in the last series as the gun-toting "Fugitive Doctor" - a fellow alien from Gallifrey on the run from galactic mercenary police.
BBC bosses are staying silent on the Mirror's revelation that Whittaker is to leave after nearly five years in the role.
But viewers think show-runner Chris Chibnall could have provided a glimpse of the future, and Whittaker will regenerate into Martin in the 2021 series.
Doctor Who expert Tom Bacon, of Screen Rant, reckons it would make sense.
"When viewers were introduced to Jo Martin's character, they thought she was a human, hunted by the Judoon; he explained.
"Little by little, though, the lies were stripped away, and the truth was revealed - she was actually the Doctor, a mystery incarnation who had hidden herself on Earth to escape the Time Lords:"
He said clues pointed to her being from the future, including the way the her pursuers treated her. "As far as the Judoon are concerned, their arrest of Whittaker's Doctor precedes their pursuit of Martin's.
"As the Doctor might put it, it's all a bit 'timey-wimey'."
Viewer Andrew Knight said Martin would be his choice to replace Whittaker as she was "the most immediately engaging Doctor since the show came back".
And fellow fan Alex Haruspis added: "We've all the justification we could need for Jo Martin to step in:'
Martin, 40, who has played Holby City neurosurgeon Max McGerry since 2019, enjoyed her cameo as a time traveller. She told Doctor Who mag: "She can be a bit moody, this Doctor. She's got an edge and a dark side as well as being cheeky and charming. She doesn't have a filter - she's not afraid to say whatever;
And Chibnall has said her introduction was "very deliberate" when it comes to the show's wider plot.
"There will be answers to some of these mysteries this series; he said. "But as ever with Doctor Who, answers often reveal new questions.
"The important thing is - she is definitively the Doctor, there's not a parallel universe going on, there's no tricks."
