NAME the doughtiest, most danger-defying doctor in the world! No prizes for the right answer—who else can it be but the fantastic DOCTOR WHO?

Jon Pertwee (right) is the third actor to tackle the role of the fabulous space-and-time traveller, and wo vote him the trendiest dresser of the three.

Jon has a great reputation for comedy, and is well-remembered as the zany postman in a radio series. His catch-phrase was: "What does it matter so long as you tear 'em up!"—and it never failed to get all the listeners

It was a brilliant stroke of casting to give Jon the part of the mysterious Doctor, for he brings to it a skilful blend of wisdom, courage, chivalrous charm — and wry humour: and that's no mean achievement! And top marks to Jon for the nifty way he twists his tongue around those long technical terms the hard-hearted scriptwriters put into the Doctor's mouth!

DOCTOR

For years the series has been a top-scorer, since the "Tardis", Doctor Who's fantastic space-and-time-machine disguised in the homely exterior of a dark blue police box, whizzed off on its first incredible journey into the unknown.

No wonder that visitors to Tardis are flabbergasted when they step through the narrow door and find them elves in a spacious room containing the most complex control panel imaginable! And now it's impossible to come across a police box without wondering if it could possibly be the Doctor's magic machine parked in the street!

The intriguing electronic twanging of the series' signature theme heralds the advent of all kinds of weird beings, bent on destroying the world, and launches the intrepid Doctor into whirlwind trips through time past, present and future.

The most striking of the Doctor's adversaries—in more ways than extol—are the Daleks. Their jerky, guttural threats to exterminate all and sundry soon raised a brigade of junior Dalek-imitators. and "Daleks" turned up at fancy dress parties everywhere in replica costumes made by clever mums.

Wonderful effects have been achieved by the BBC backroom boys and girls in creating the make-up. costumes and scenery for the bizarre character, who people the world of DOCTOR WHO, and the last, four-part series introduced some weird "anti-matter" creatures, who appeared to be composed of a hotch-potch of bubbles and barnacles and who lived in grottoes that, as one of the Doctor's companions said, were "like Aladdin's cave"!

This latest series was named "The Three Doctors" and brought back our old Mends Dr. Who Number One (William Hartnell) and Dr. Who Number Two (Patrick Troughton). The Time Lords had sent them to help their other self. Dr. Who Number Three (Jon Pertwee) out of his difficulties with the antimatter brigade! And, as it happens, the three different Dr. Who personalities didn't really hit off! It seems that Dr. Number Three can't abide Dr. Number Two's recorder playing—even if it does, help the fellow to think!

But three Doctor Who, for the price of MO is a bonus for us viewers, so good luck to the thro. fabulous "Doctors" and thanks for all the excitement and fun they have given its in their travels through space and time.
