Protect the police-box!

I read in my newspaper that the BBC is thinking of changing the shape of the Tardis (Doctor Who, Wednesday BBC1).

As a long-standing Doctor Who fan with six children who also enjoy the programme, may I just say: don't do it. The Doctor's peculiar craft, along with his idiosyncratic clothes, forms part of the programme's charm. What is more, the Tardis is almost a national institution.

Besides which, since the Doctor, after all this time, still seems to have little control over where the ship lands, or even when, what reason is there to believe that he could successfully alter the outside appearance? ... Katie Mallett Canvey Island, Essex

JOHN NATHAN-TURNER, Producer, 'Doctor Who', replies:

At the moment no firm decision has been taken with regard to the future of the Tardis.

Understanding time travel

Andrew Cameron, saying that four of The Five Doctors would all be aware of their adventure already (LETTERS 31 December-6 January), has fallen prey to the theory that time has to be travelled, in one direction, from start to finish.

For time-lords, time is not sequential: all the Doctor Whos, scooped from their own present times, experienced these events simultaneously. Not being in their own time, they would not undergo the experience again when they resumed their lives.
