[edit]

DR. WHO is getting a new face—and it belongs to 40-year-old actor Tom Baker.

And yesterday the B.B.C. revealed how the transformation is to take place.

For as anyone who watches telly on Saturdays knows, it is physically impossible for the doctor to die—although TV's time traveller will come pretty close to it at the end of the present series in May.

After the transformation the doctor will cease to look like actor Jon Pertwee (who is to "retire" after four years in the part and start to bear a striking resemblance to 6ft. 3in. tall Tom Baker.

Tips

Faced with the choice of letting the world crumble or sacrificing his own life, the Doctor will choose to save the world.

But that's were his two hearts will come in very handy-When the new series starts at Christmas he will simply "regenerate" in a new body.

Yesterday Tom was introduced to the girl who plays the Doctor's assistant Sarah Jane — fellow Liverpudlian Elisabeth Sladen.

And no doubt she gave him a few tips on driving the Tardis time-machine.

It all makes a bit of a change for Tom. He played the mad monk Rasputin, in the film "Nicholas and Alexandra" and admits : " I used to worry because in the old days people just asked me to play demented murderers or a large blue-eyed psychotic."
