PICK OF THE DAY

Doctor Who 6.20pm BBC1, BBC HD

DRAMA

Hallucinogenic lipstick, ruby stilettos, laser pistol and "Hello, sweetie"... Who else could it be but River Song, the Doctor's future love who first turned up two years ago in the library of flesh-eating shadows. "We keep meeting in the wrong order," says her Time Lord toyboy. Alex Kingston reprises the role of the intergalactic archaeologist with gusto and looks magnificent —be it glammed up like Rita Hayworth or roughing it in fatigues a la Orla Guerin.

River joins the Doctor on his first trip with Amy to an alien planet. A crashed spaceship leads them to a cavern of the dead, where terrifying forces lurk in the darkness. Yes, those Weeping Angels are back! The statues that stalk you when you blink helped Steven Moffat score a Bafta in 2007, and now he invests them with even more alarming powers.

We're in much creepier territory than the past few episodes — I jumped four times at least. And the first five minutes alone are dazzlingly original. Let Moffat and his Angels deliver you to Doctor Who heaven.

DOCTOR WHO'S SCARIEST MONSTERS*

Nearly twice as many voted for the Angels as for the Daleks, and, together with the Clockwork Robots at 4, that's two Moffat creations in the top five

1 Weeping Angels

2 Daleks

3 Cybermen

4 Clockwork Robots

5 Scarecrows

*As voted last year by readers of Doctor Who Adventures magazine

DON'T BLINK!

The petrifying Weeping Angels are back
