After 40 episodes (more than Tennant, fewer than Smith) Peter Capaldi hangs up his sonic screwdriver as the 12th Doctor becomes the 13th. This being Christmas, however, the Doctor is in a generous mood and we get not one regeneration, but two as David Bradley reprises his role as the first Doctor for an emotional and heartrending festive special. It is a fitting farewell to Capaldi (and to the showrunner Steven Moffat), who trades some hilarious repartee with Bradley (much fun is had with the first Doctor's 1960s values — don't worry about the logic of that) as they puzzle over why time has stopped and why a First World War army captain (Mark Gatiss) has turned up in the South Pole. Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie, pictured with Capaldi and Bradley) is back too, but we'll keep the details of her involvement under wraps. And then there's the appearance of another time-travelling lady...
