DOCTOR WHO

When the elegant Jon Pertwee (above) landed on the planet Spiridon in 1973, it marked the start of a classic six-part Doctor Who adventure, Planet of the Daleks, written by Terry Nation, and repeated from Friday on BBC1 as part of the Doctor's 30th anniversary celebrations.

The 1972 - 73 series, which conjured up Ogrons, Sea Devils, the Master, giant green maggots and, of course, the Daleks, also heralded the departure of Katy Manning as assistant Jo Grant. "When I went to the audition I was just one of a crowd," she says. "But I screamed, freaked out and got the job."

Doctor Who and the Daleks Friday 7.30pm BBC1, 5.30pm BBC2 in Scotland, 10.35pm Northern Ireland

Doctor Who and the Masque of Mandragora Sunday 10.00am UK Gold Doctor Who: The Dead Planet Monday - Friday UK Gold (times vary)
