The first episode after any regeneration of the Time Lord is never an easy watch: after all, it is the only show that regularly expects fans to accept a completely new cast and transfer their affections to a new Doctor without a qualm. The Woman Who Fell to Earth is a bumpy re-entry for the franchise — not because there is anything wrong with Jodie Whittaker's high-stakes, paradigm-shifting debut, but because Chris Chibnall's Sheffield-set story and alien threat feel slightly peremptory. A little exposition is only to be expected as the post-Peter Capaldi age begins, though, and there is lots to love here: Whittaker's oddly David Tennant-like time traveller slowly rebooting her formidable intellect (and her sonic screwdriver) after the strains of regenerating — "It's been a long time since I bought women's clothes"; a veneer of urban gloom and a promising clutch of new companions, including Bradley Walsh. All she needs to do now is find her missing Tardis — and a few more jokes — and this series should fly.
