Through Time by Andrew Cartmel, Continuum, 12/05, $59.95, ISBN 0-8264-1733-7 Back to the Vortex by J. Shaun Lyon, Telos, 2005, $22.95, ISBN 1-903889-78-2

Both of these books deal with the inimitable Doctor Who, recently returned to television by the BBC after a long and much regretted absence. The first is a detailed history of the Doctor and his exploits throughout his many manifestations. It is an interesting retrospective tour and quite well written, although I don't know if this comparatively slender volume is worth the rather high price tag, at least in hardcover. There's a trade paperback edition for $24.95 which is probably a much better buy for fans. The second title deals almost exclusively with the newest Doctor, the first season at least, which provides very detailed plot summaries and background information, but also covers the popular and critical reaction in great detail. It's a far more comprehensive and interesting approach, and one of the better television books I've ever read.
