Ingeborg Pertwee's first novel, Together, is also written in the first person. Her narrator is a sexy slut of 39, born in Germany, living now in England with an actor; her daughter, whom she had tried to have aborted, turns up on the doorstep and puts all kinds of fat in the fire. Mother goes off to Ibiza for six weeks and has an intense. sweaty affair with a good-for-nothing-hut-sex young man. Daughter gets pregnant by actor, and there soon develops a wacky menage a trois in which, as Mother declares, it wasn't happiness I was making for. It was contentment.' The book has a Brief Encounter shape to it, in which you are invited to read again the first chapter.
Ingeborg Pertwee has a brisk, get-on-with-it style and a beady eye for furniture, clothes, journeys, drinks, meals and all the mechanics of living, including more than one brand of sex. Her two main female characters are convincingly drawn, but the actor and the other showbiz people in the book are as bloodless as, and rather less charming than, the Daleks with whom her real-life husband, Jon Pertwee, deals so confidently in the guise of Dr Who. However, this is a skilful and entertaining first novel, if somewhat lacking in nourishment; let us hope that it is just the hors d'oeuvre and that Ingeborg Pertwee's next course will satisfy as well as stimulate the reader's appetite.
