Tributes were paid today to actor Patrick Troughton, the BBC's second Dr Who, who died in the United States at the weekend, aged 67.

He suffered a heart attack while attending a Dr Who convention in Columbus, Georgia.

Dr Who producer John Nathan Turner said Mr Troughton would be "sorely missed by the profession in general and the Dr Who 'family' in particular.

He added: "Patrick Troughton returned to play the part of the Doctor on the 10th anniversary of the show in 1973 and the 20th anniversary in 1983 He also appeared in a special programme with recent Dr Who Colin Baker in 1985.

"He was an actor of tremendous integrity with a natural sense of fun The profession is deprived of one of its true professionals."

Mr Troughton played many other roles, including Hitler in Night Conspirators.

His films included Sinbad, Eye of the Tiger, and Omen

On television he had parts in Dr Finlay's Casebook, Coronation Street, Six Wives of Henry VII, The Old Curiosity Shop and A Family at War.

His latest work was for ITV's serial The Two of Us.
