TWO Daleks were at Sydney Airport on Friday to greet Tom Baker, of 'Dr Who' fame, who is making his first visit to Australia to promote the latest of his science-fiction adventures.
Wearing his well-known long scarf and large hat, he expressed surprise that among the enormous crowd there to meet him were many adults. "I'm not really interested in adults", he said. "It's children that fascinate me".
He said he didn't believe adults really understood the Dr Who show; they just pretended to. "It's far too fantastical for adults to relate to", he said.
Despite this, dozens of members of Australian fan clubs were there to see him arrive, including the Sydney University Science Fiction Association.
I even heard it told this week that when a rowdy demonstration was in progress on the campus of a British university once, violence was averted when a member of the academic staff had it announced very loudly that 'Dr Who' had started. The crowd broke up in confusion, heading for TV sets, and it was not until too late that they realised that 'Dr Who' wasn't scheduled until the following night.
