Doctor Who 7pm, BBC1

The way in which this revival has been ogled and obsessed over says much about the postmodern times in which we live. So does the series itself, with its self-knowing asides at internet Who nerdies and the way it's constantly grinning at itself, as if the characters know they're just in a famous telly series. The SFX are OK but preprogrammed to look naff in 10 years time, while the plotline here is quintessentially Who-daft and cribbed from Kraftwerk's Showroom Dummies to boot. But Christopher Eccleston is rather good as the Doctor, as down-to-earth as supernatural gets, cheerfully embracing danger for its own sake.
