What Katy Does

Sam meets Katy Manning

KATY MANNING, Dr Who's current accomplice, has no illusions about make-up and cosmetic products.

"Basically, they're all the same," she says. "You find that out when you do any photo graphic model work-as I did, before I became an actress.

"You can pay pounds and pounds for a nice small and luxurious package, but I don't think the actual contents are any better than some of the cheaper products.

"Also a lot of the new lines which claim to do wonders for you are made by the old companies under a different label ... it's all a big sell.

But unless she's going out (when she gets very enthusiastic), Katy seldom wears much make-up.

"You have to wear make-up in the studios," she explains. "and the lights make it very hot, so your pores open up-and in floods the make-up.

"Then you go out in the cold, and your pores close up-and then you get nasty little bumps and things.

"To clean my skin very thoroughly use pHisoHex. I'm really into that I like to wash my skin rather than cream it clean, and by using pHisoHex, which is medicated, I get it really, really clean

"I normally use very time make-up. When I do, I use Max Factor pan stick make-up, very pale, put on with a sponge, mascara, a little browny shading and a rusty colour to make my lips a little redder, I never bother to put on false lashes or anything like that."

For years and years Kate has bitten her nails, really bitten them down to the quick. She puts this down to nervous tension, and has even -- during extreme moments of stress -- tended to nibble down the sides of her index fingers as well.

But now, thanks to Dr Who (alias Jon Pertwee) Kate is sporting Biba's dark plum nail varnish on grown nails. They not very long yet, but they're neat!

How, after years of trying anything to stop biting her nails, was Kate are to break habit?

"Well, I did use some Stop 'n' Grow, which helped at first, but then the taste of that!

"Then one day I told Jon how impossible found it to stop. From then on, every time he caught sight of me across the studio biting my nails he'd go 'Tch, Tch' to make me aware I was doing it and stop. And do you know, I can hear him say that from right across a crowded, noisy room. That's how I did it ..."

Though not taken in by manufacturers' promises for clear, glowing complexion if she uses such and such a product. Katy is very careful about skin lotions.

"I'm determined to take great care over my skin she says "All of it. I've been a Badedas lady for the past six years and I use masses of baby oil to keep my skin soft. Not for me the crepey look of the over-thirties!

"I don't wear perfume, because I get a bit of asthma and perfume makes me sneeze. Anyway I love the natural smell when the warmth of the skin works on the Badedas and baby lotion It's a very natural soft smell-if you know what I mean."

Katy's hair is layer cut, she's growing it from a Joan of Arc cut and now it frames her face, and ends at her neck. It's a fair sun-kissed colour.

"My own colour is slightly darker than this," she says. "About one shade, and a bit redder... I use a fairly strong lightener on it (champagne, I think it's called) to get it into this shade.

"I don't have any regular outside hairdresser, Since I've been in Dr Who. I've had it done by a girl at the BBC, She can make it look marvellous just by putting in a few electric rollers.

"But when I do it at home I just wash it under the tap, use loads of conditioner and then let it dry."

We were sitting in her fat having coffee, with Katy sitting on a low seat, rocking to and fro really bitten them down to the c She puts as talked. Bright and breezy, she never this down to nervous tension, and has even-sits still for a moment! She was wearing a pair during extreme moments of stress-tended to of blue denim jeans, white clogs and a super nibble down the sides of her index fingers as long-sleeved T-shirt in yellow, orange and brown.

For the photos she changed into a really super smock and shorts set in red, blue and yellow, with cream canvas boots, a yellow hat with a tiny blue butterfly.

"I love bright colours-I've just got into the black and yellow thing I love purple and have purple things," she said.

Katy has 15 or 20 pairs of boots-all from Biba! She never wears shoes-always boots started after she had a car crash which left one leg a fraction more crooked than the other.

Katy was a bit self-conscious about this and discovered that boots disguised it. They also give her more support for weak ankles than shoes.

She's been wearing shorts for at least three years-which is two years longer than anyone else. She refuses to call them hot pants, which she thinks is a horrible term

It started when she was wearing mini mini dresses and skirts-so short that she hit on the idea of wearing tiny shorts - a bit like boxers shorts-underneath, to match the dress. Her mother made them up for her.

"It meant that I was always confident about stepping out car knowing tops of tights panties were meant that could sit in a relaxed position and still look modest!

"I've always hated seeing all those stocking tops and tights tops-it's so ugly. I just had to do something.

"My mother made me some marvelous smocks for summer, knitted me some shorts, and often pops into the flat with something she's bought for me. Recently, for instance. when I arrived home from the studios a beautiful little bikini was waiting for me.

"She always gets the right sizes, colours and things. They all know her in Mr Freedom and Granny Takes A Trip and places like that They know she's on the lookout for something for me.

"My father has been a little slower to accept some of the trends in clothes, though he's gone overboard for shorts. He's really keen on them.

The other night he took me out to dinner at the Caprice (a very expensive place in London) and I wore dark velvet dungarees and a white lace shirt. And that was quite acceptable, even there where they all drip jewels and things.

"But that's what it's like now, in? Fashion no longer dictates-you wear what you want to wear and no-one complains.

Katy also has a midh velvet coat from Granny Takes A Trip, which she adores and wears when she goes out in the evening. She also has a few long soft floaty things for a gala night.

But on the whole she likes her clothes comfortable, casual and short.

I think the midi suits a wall, willowy woman in her thirties, but short side and there's not much of you, like me, then I'm all for showing a little of the little you've got!"
