THE BBC will do well to shelve Dr Who as a cost-cutting exercise. In October, 1983, I was on a plane at Gatwick waiting to take off for Lanzarote in the Canaries. After some delay, the last passengers boarded and we left half-an-hour late. Those passengers were actors and a production team going to the island to film a new Dr Who story.

Although not a fan of the programme, I watched with great interest when it was shown in 1984 as I know Lanzarote very well.

I could only pinpoint three scenes as genuine Lanzarote and what I saw could have been shot anywhere in Britain at a fraction of the cost.

The story I watched was a blatant waste of our licence fees.
