Plans continue apace for November's celebration of the 20th anniversary of the first broadcast of Dr. Who in Great Britain—and now those plans have spread across the ocean to the United States.
On November 23, the BBC will host "the world's biggest birthday party" for the Doctor, including an 80-station hook-up here in
America for a broadcast of the 90-minute special, A Birthday Celebration for Doctor Who. The program, which will also be seen in Britain, features appearances by three of the five actors who have portrayed the Time Lord: Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and the current Doctor, Peter Davison. A new actor has been hired to play the first incarnation, originated by the late William Hartnell. Unfortunately, schedule conflicts kept fourth Doctor Tom Baker from participating. Stations in Chicago, Philadelphia, Tampa, Denver and other cities have already signed on for the broadcast. Check your local Who-station to see if the special will be seen in your area.
In addition, the Beeb (as it's known in Britain) has authorized Adam Malin and Gary Berman of Creation Conventions to hold Who conventions here in the U.S. Malin and Berman sponsored one in Chicago last month, with a Philadelphia congregation coming up this month (August 20-21) at the Philadelphia Centre Hotel, and a Boston get-together on November 19-20, at the Boston Sheraton. They've also set up a "Dr. Who Hotline" for info about the cons and the birthday bash: 800-645-6479 outside of New York State; 516-747-2033 in New York.
As a final note, the BBC asks Who fans worldwide to send birthday cards to the veteran SF serial. The address is Dr. Who Party/Box 215/Pearl River, NY 10965. The cards will be forwarded to the show's crew.
Happy Birthday, Doctor! Remember: The first 20—or 750 —are the hardest!
