[edit]

As a long-term viewer of Doctor Who, I am still not sure if the casting of a woman as the Doctor is not a joke. It is no reflection on Jodie Whittaker, who was excellent in Broadchurch. And women make great science-fiction heroes, from Bully Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager.

But these are original characters. Is it appropriate, or likely, that any of them would undergo a gender shift? I hope that I will be proved wrong, and that the female Doctor will somehow be a success.

... I was disappointed to read that the majority of comments RT received regarding the casting of the 13th Doctor were negative. Sadly, people who are angry are more inclined to comment.

Everyone I know who likes Doctor Who is positive about the casting.

I find it odd that a show so much about change has some fans who seem to have difficulty with it. Like the "too young" gripes before Matt Smith's first season, I expect that, for most people, as soon as we see Jodie in the role she will be not the first female Doctor, just the new Doctor.

...I can't believe the fuss over the casting of the new Doctor as a woman. Why should it warrant so much as a raised eyebrow? As long ago as 1928, in her novel Orlando, Virginia Woolf created a hero who is inexplicably transformed from man to woman - and lives on without visibly ageing for another 300 years (the first Time Lord?).
